Flights delayed as storm approaches Shanghai

SHANGHAI'S two airports reported massive flight delays early in the afternoon after Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued an orange thunderstorm alert at 2pm today.

Dark clouds threatened a big rainstorm in the afternoon that will bring some coolness to the city.

The forecasters issued a yellow alert at noon but soon upgraded it to orange, the second highest of a four-color warning system and advised people to stay indoors.

The thunderstorm is accompanied with high winds and the city is expected to lift the yellow heat alert after the downpour.

Six flights bounded for Hongqiao International Airport have been diverted to land in the Pudong International Airport or airports in neighboring Nanjing and Hangzhou city due to the bad weather, according to Shanghai airport authority.

A ferry service on the Huangpu River was also canceled because of strong winds, the city's traffic authority said.
