Flights grounded, ferries halted as thick smog descends on city

HEAVY fog caused the cancellation of 22 flights into and out of Pudong International Airport between midnight and 9am yesterday, while 24 others were delayed and 10 had to be redirected, authorities said.

Between 8am and 9am, which is usually a peak period, six flights were canceled, while just 10 landed and 30 took off as visibility fell to 300 meters, the airport said.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a yellow fog alert at 5am yesterday as visibility dropped to 500 meters in most parts of the city.

Suburban Chongming County and the Pudong New Area were among the areas that were most affected.

The fog also led to a 90-minute suspension of all ferries across the Huangpu River, while various boat services running between Chongming, Changxing and Hengsha islands were also disrupted.

For safety reasons, would-be Huangpu ferry passengers with bicycles were given a police escort over the river via Xupu Bridge.

The fog alert was lifted about 10:15am when conditions improved, the bureau said.

After a balmy start to the working week — yesterday’s top temperature was 21 degrees Celsius in some parts of the city — today will be considerably cooler due to an incoming cold front that will cap the mercury at 11 degrees, forecasters said.

There is also a good chance of rain today and tomorrow, as the high falls even further to just 7 degrees.

Thursday and Friday will be colder still, with the mercury set to drop to 2 or 3 degrees in downtown areas, and close to freezing in suburban districts, the bureau said.

The city’s air quality was classed as “lightly polluted” yesterday. While the expected showers over the next few days should improve things, the pollution is expected to make a return by the weekend.
