Forecasters predict dry, cloudy week

WEATHER forecasters have predicted a dry and cloudy week with temperatures in the twenties.

Due to the influence of a weak cold front, intermittent showers are expected in parts of the city today.

It will be cloudy with a high of 29 degrees Celsius today. On Wednesday, a wave of high pressure will ensure clear skies.

The mercury is likely to dip by 1 or 2 degrees in the week with the high ranging between 27 and 28 degrees. The low will hover between 21 and 23 degrees.

The air quality level was almost perfect yesterday. The Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center has forecast a similar air condition today despite the fact that the ozone layer will increase a bit in the afternoon.

Today is also Bailu, the 15th solar term in the traditional Chinese lunar calendar, popularly known as white dews. It indicates that the summer time is gone.

In the Yangtze and Huaihe river valleys it is usually humid during this period. In some ancient Chinese works, it was linked with the southward migration of wild geese, the leaving of swallows and birds’ and getting ready for the cold season. An ancient Chinese saying describes the solar term as “white dews and autumn winds, cooler and cooler nights.”
