Forecasters set to say winter's here

WINTER is likely to be officially announced today - but the weather is set to get warmer as the week progresses.

Today should be sunny with some cloud and temperatures between 2 and 10 degrees Celsius, higher than the freezing conditions over the weekend, Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said yesterday.

And the mercury should continue climbing a few degrees over the next few days.

But the change of season should still be clinched, said forecasters.

Under China's weather standards, winter is announced once the average temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius for five consecutive days following lidong, or the beginning of winter, usually around November 8.

The city's average temperature has been below 10 degrees since last Thursday and the bureau is likely to announce winter today. Last Thursday would be the first day of winter.

The low dropped to minus 1 degree yesterday morning, the lowest this season.

But the low later this week is set to climb to 7 to 9 degrees Celsius, while the high could hit 13 degrees. It will be more overcast during the week.

Light air pollution is forecast today, said the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.
