Free Wi-Fi for Pudong bus passengers
BUS passengers in the Pudong New Area can now make use of a free Wi-Fi service.
The 16wifi service was launched yesterday, covering more than 3,000 buses running in Pudong.
By the end of January, the free Wi-Fi service will be ready in 3,800 buses of 220 bus routes in Pudong, including 88 routes that cross the Huangpu River to Puxi, said officials.
The Wi-Fi signals are transferred by 3G networks, which makes it stable even in more remote regions, said officials.
“It’s a nice move for Pudong residents to kill time in the bus. It means I won’t need to worry about my data package,” said Mark Zhang, who lives in Huamu Road and spends two hours a day commuting.
Zhang often uses up his monthly data package of 400 megabytes a week before the end of every month, which costs him extra money.
Beijing-based 16wifi.com is paying for the Wi-Fi service, including equipment, installation, data and operation. It plans to run advertisements and distribute mobile applications and games to earn cash.
More than 1.7 million people take buses each day in Pudong, which could bring the high-tech firm huge Internet traffic and potential income.
In Puxi, Wi-Fi is available in buses such as the No. 49, connecting downtown area such as the Bund, People’s Square and Shanghai Stadium.
