Frigid forecast for Chinese New Year

A COLD weather alert was issued at 11am today by the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

Temperatures in the city are forecast to keep dropping and today's high is expected to be 0 degrees Celsius with a low of minus 3 degrees, according to the bureau. Winds will gust up to 74 kilometers per hour, making it feel even colder.

Tomorrow the temperature is expected to drop to minus 5 degrees with severe frost.

The mercury will dip to minus 5 degrees on Sunday although it could plunge to 9 below zero in the suburbs.

Weather forecasters said it will be cloudy over the weekend and on Monday and Tuesday, the first two days of the Year of the Ox.

The mercury should rebound on Wednesday and some light rain is forecast.
