GPS leads police to driver of illegal cab

AN illegal taxi driver has been detained by police because his equipment was just too good.

The stolen GPS system that the would-be cabbie, surnamed Hu, had bought led police straight to him.

"He tried to show off with the equipment," said officials with the local traffic law enforcement team, which supervises taxi operations. "Obviously he overestimated his cleverness."

A regular cabbie, surnamed Yang, reported to the police that his cab's equipment, including meter and the GPS, had been stolen shortly after he had parked his taxi on July 23.

The devices had cost him 5,300 yuan (US$781.75).

To Yang's surprise, the company he worked for detected a signal sent by Yang's GPS at its booking center just four days later on July 27.

The suspect driver was caught at 3pm that day after police traced the signal to Putuo District. The "cloned" cab has been confiscated by the enforcement team.

Hu told the police that he had first bought a retired taxi from an underground market. The set of equipment was later purchased from a dealer.

He had no idea that the GPS system might lead to his downfall.
