Get ready for the big freeze ...
SHANGHAI will see temperatures dip below freezing tomorrow and on Friday as the latest cold front hits the city, forecasters said yesterday.
Sleet and snow are expected today and there could be ice on some roads at night, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.
The bureau issued a blue cold-wave alert, lowest of a four-level system, at 5pm yesterday, warning that temperatures could drop by 7 to 9 degrees from today with northerly gales of up to 61 kilometers an hour.
The wind will be stronger in the city's ports and coastal areas at up to 102kph, the bureau said.
Temperatures are expected to drop to minus 1 degree Celsius over the next two days, with lows of minus 3 to minus 5 degrees in the suburbs, the bureau said.
Today is forecast to be sleety to snowy with temperatures from 2 to 7 degrees.
Tomorrow is expected to be cloudy to sunny with highs of just 5 degrees.
A yellow gale alert, the third highest of the four-level system, was issued in the East China Sea yesterday. Sixty ships on 14 lines from the Yangshan Deep-Water Port to Zhoushan and Shengsi islands in Zhejiang Province couldn't sail yesterday with gales reaching 88kph, the port authority said, adding that today it would be the same.
Meanwhile, China's meteorological center forecast yesterday that temperatures would drop by as much as 10 degrees over the next 24 hours. At 5pm, the temperature had reached minus 8.5 degrees in Beijing, the National Meteorological Center said.
He Lifu, the center's chief forecaster, said that heavy snow was expected to hit Hubei, Zhejiang and Hunan provinces last night.
However, the center said that as the cold front lessened temperatures would start to rise from Friday in most regions across the country.
