Giant fashion center under way
CONSTRUCTION started today on the Shanghai International Fashion Center, the largest textile and fashion park in Asia.
The first phase of the project includes a fashion club house, multi-functional showrooms and a 400-meter yacht marina and will be completed in Yangpu District before the Shanghai World Expo opens in May, Xinmin Evening News reported.
The main showroom will accommodate 800 guests.
The second phase of the project is expected to be completed in 2011 and will have offices, boutique hotels and a fashion warehouse.
The whole project, covering 180,000 square meters, will be the largest fashion park in Asia.
The project is a recreation of the original Shanghai No. 17 General Cotton Mill, which dates back more than 80 years. The buildings have characteristic sawtooth roofs and were used as a Japanese spinning factory before the end of World War II in 1945.
