‘Great heat’? ... More like ‘great rain’
TORRENTIAL rain and thunder yesterday marked the arrival of Chinese solar term “Dashu” — “great heat” — traditionally said to herald the hottest part of summer.
Wet weather with high humidity is likely to continue to the start of next week, though an increase in temperatures is expected from Sunday as a subtropical high strengthens.
In what has been an unusually cool summer, the year’s first official “high temperature day” — when the mercury hits 35 degrees Celsius — is forecast on Monday, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
Skies are forecast to clear on Tuesday.
Dark clouds gathered over the city yesterday morning, bringing brief but torrential downpours, mainly in central, western and northern parts of the city.
The bureau issued two yellow alerts for lightning and rain shortly before noon.
According to the bureau, by 4pm, suburban Chongming County had recorded the highest rainfall at 47 millimeters, followed by Minhang District on 36 millimeters.
Rain, possibly accompanied by thunder, is forecast for today and tomorrow. Thundershowers are forecast for Sunday and Monday.
The mercury will range between 26 and 33 degrees today and tomorrow, with the high 34 degrees on Sunday.
Monday and Tuesday could see temperatures reach 35 degrees, said forecasters.
