Hangzhou to give out 40m yuan in travel coupons

SOME Shanghai residents will receive travel coupons from authorities in Hangzhou City next month.

Hangzhou is giving out 40 million yuan (US$5.85 million) in coupons to boost its tourism industry. The coupons will be given to citizens in the Yangtze Delta region, Shanghai Morning Post reported today.

Shanghai will be one of the key target cities. Although details on how the coupons will be distributed have not been finalized, they will be handed out next month, the report said.

Travelers will be able to use the coupon to pay for entrance fees at scenic sights, theater tickets, food and entertainment while in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, the city's travel commission said.

Shanghai authorities are considering similar measures to boost tourism to the city. It plans to issue travel cards and provide more discounts to tourists who stay longer, the report said.

Key tourism project Happy Valley, an amusement park in Songjiang District, will be completed this year, said the report.
