Have-a-go-hero senior in bus attack tracked down
AN elderly man who tried to stop a brutal attack on a female bus driver while other passengers did nothing to help was traced yesterday.
The Baoshan District Prosecutors' Office, which initiated the search, said it will issue a thank-you letter to praise the bravery of 74-year-old Xu Zonglin.
Xu came under the spotlight several days after a neighbor recognized his face in a video clip released by the bus company.
He can be seen rebuking the attacker and trying his utmost to stop the violence.
"In all the years I've lived, I've never seen a beating like that," said Xu.
On May 13, Xu took a No. 116 bus from Yangpu District to Baoshan District to visit his wife in a nursing home.
Along the way, a disturbed passenger who had taken the wrong bus attacked the driver, demanding that she stop the vehicle on an elevated road.
The driver refused and kept the bus moving, even though her attacker beat her for three minutes which she later described as "the darkest three minutes in my life."
Prosecutors said there were around 20 passengers on the bus but only Xu tried to stop the attack, according to the camera footage.
Xu, who was sitting at the front, attempted to remonstrate with the attacker but backed off when he was threatened.
"I would have hoped that more passengers would have stepped in to help," Xu said.
When the attacker fled, Xu tried to follow him to help provide clues for police.
Xu said he then saw another No. 116 bus coming and reported the assault.
Xu's bravery, in contrast to the indifference of other passengers, brought compliments from the public.
"We should learn from his courage and encourage young people to be as brave as he was," said a neighbor.
