Hazardous chemical plants shut
IN its ongoing campaign to improve worksite safety, the city shut down 413 manufacturers of hazardous chemicals and transferred about 2.76 million tons of toxic material to industrial parks between 2011 and 2015, officials said yesterday.
Hazardous chemicals pose the biggest threat to workers in Shanghai, said Qi Jun, head of the city’s work safety authority.
“The aim of our work is to reduce the total amount of hazardous waste and introduce centralized management and a stricter registration system,” Qi said, adding that in 2012, all of the city’s hazardous substance manufacturers were moved to industrial parks.
There were 2,585 worksite accidents in the city in the first five months of 2016, resulting in 386 deaths, according to Qi.
