Head-on driver arrested

A WOMAN who turned herself in 12 hours after a fatal hit-and-run accident last Sunday has been arrested under the approval of Pudong New Area Prosecutors' Office, Shanghai police have confirmed.

According to an investigation last week, Pudong New Area police found the driver surnamed Cheng guilty and fully responsible for the accident, said the Shanghai Public Security Bureau on its Website. The police also cancelled Cheng's fine of 500 yuan (US$73).

"According to the traffic law of the People's Republic of China, those who flee after a traffic accident will be considered fully responsible for the accident," the police said.

However, the police did not release anything about the inspections they had entrusted other authorities with after Cheng was detained last Monday. It is still unclear whether the 33-year-old had drunk alcohol on the night of the accident.

"The investigation is still ongoing," a Pudong police official said.

Cheng drove her car into the opposite lane on Hunan Road last Sunday at around midnight and killed 57-year-old vegetable dealer Lin Dongchu in a head-on crash with his electric bike. Two other cars were damaged in the accident. Cheng fled the scene after her car lost a front wheel.

Cheng walked into a police station accompanied by family members at noon the next day and confessed her part in the fatal crash.
