Head-on truck-van crash kills 7, injures 7
SEVEN people were killed and seven injured in Shanghai's Fengxian District yesterday afternoon when a truck skidded across a rain-slicked highway into oncoming traffic.
The resulting five-car pile-up caused a traffic jam that lasted more than five hours, police said.
The injured were sent to a Fengxian hospital where one victim, suffering head injuries, was in serious condition. The others were stable.
"The rain caused a lot of trouble rescuing the victims and controlling the traffic," said a spokesman for Fengxian District police.
City police were still investigating the cause of the crash last night.
They did say that the truck, heading toward Jinshan District in the south on the S4 Expressway, lost control and plowed through a median barrier at 3:50pm.
The vehicle hit a minibus head-on, starting a chain reaction involving three vehicles that were traveling behind it.
The minibus broke into two pieces, and the driver was jammed inside, witness said.
A rescue team also had to remove the top of a car damaged in the crash to save the driver.
"It was really a narrow escape," said the driver, who was slightly injured.
Authorities cordoned off the area and called in the tow trucks to remove the crashed vehicles.
The expressway reopened to traffic at about 9:35pm, police said.
