Heavy downpour will continue rest of the day with alerts issued

HEAVY downpour will continue today under the influence of a plum rain belt with the Nanxiang area in Jiading District getting the wettest in the city, forecasters said.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a yellow alert for rainstorm, the third highest of four levels, and a yellow alert on thunder, the lowest, at 9am, warning the precipitation would reach over 50mm within six hours.

Nanxiang recorded 14.3mm between 9am and 12am today, followed by Pudong, which had 10.9mm, according to the bureau.

Other areas received less than 10mm.

Torrential rain will continue tomorrow, and the total precipitation between today and tomorrow's daytime is expected to reach 60 to 100mm, with Chongming County, Baoshan and Jiading districts the most severely hit.

More heavily rain is forecasted for tonight and tomorrow's daytime, according to the bureau.

It should weaken on Thursday and stop on Friday and Saturday as the city will be on the northern edge of the rain belt, but rain will be back on Sunday, according to forecasters.
