High salary to lure bus drivers

IN a fresh bid to attract recruits, Pudong Public Transport, one of the city’s biggest bus companies, plans to raise the annual income of its drivers to 90,000 yuan (US$14,125) next year, Shanghai Daily learned at the firm’s job fair yesterday.

Facing a shortage of drivers and grappling with an ageing workforce, the company has been pushing aggressively to lure young blood. So in cooperation with the Pudong New Area government, it will provide qualified applicants aged under 30 a subsidy of at most 2,222 yuan during the training program they need to gain the required driving license.

Prior to 2012, the company only recruited staff with A1 or A3 driving license but now, with few youngsters interested in being public transport bus drivers, the threshold has been lowered so applicants without a driving license or with lower-grade licenses are also considered as candidates.

The average income of the bus drivers is 82,000 yuan a year before tax, which has risen for three straight years, with a hike of some 8,000-yuan every time.

“There won’t be much difference in salary between drivers who have worked for 10 years and the newly recruited ones,” said Dong Xiaowei, human resources manager at Yanggao Bus, a part of Pudong Public Transport.

The job fair drew about 50 applicants, mostly aged around 30.

“The pay is very attractive and the job is more stable,” said Zhang Tianyuan, a 24-year-old Pudong resident.

Zhang, having earlier worked at a cinema and a factory, earning about 40,000 yuan a year, was pleasantly surprised at the 82,000-yuan-a-year figure, which “is much beyond my expectations.”
