High-speed rail link for airports urged
SHANGHAI policy advisers and traffic experts suggested building a high-speed railway to link the city's two airports and better integrate public transport in Hongqiao, an emerging business district.
Officials also said yesterday that three new high-speed railways are awaiting approval. If given the green light, the routes will provide fast train services to Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Kunming.
Chen Weili, the Hongqiao CBD Committee's deputy director, said yesterday "we will try to balance traffic and business functions in the area."
"It's like building another Lujiazui business area," added Chen.
The area already boasts the Hongqiao Transport Hub, which includes an airport, high-speed railway station and two subway lines.
The hub handles an average of 700,000 passengers per day although this is expected to reach 1.4 million in about five years.
Chen said the government and traffic authorities are "still doing research on constructing a high-speed railway between Pudong and Hongqiao airports."
Meanwhile, Metro lines 17, 23 and an extension of Line 5 are awaiting approval.
Also Jiangqiao Station on Line 13 is expected to open for trial operation by the end of this year, the committee said.
Government advisers also said the area's road network is underdeveloped.
Li Feikang, a member with Shanghai's top advisory body, said that relying on subways is not enough.
