Highway, bridge projects to benefit suburban districts

CONSTRUCTION started this morning to build two extensions of an elevated highway connecting Jiading and Minhang districts and shorten the time of travel between the Hongqiao business hub and the western parts of the city.

The north and south extensions of the elevated Jiading-Minhang Highway are built by the state-owned Shanghai Chengtou Corporation. They will stretch the road by 10.4 kilometers and connect it with other inter-city highways.

People going to the Hongqiao International Airport, Hongqiao High-speed Railway Station, and other venues in the hub will benefit from the extension project which is expected to open to traffic by December 2014.

Also this morning, a new bridge over the Huangpu River is under construction in the city's southwestern Songjiang District. The 1,648-meter-long, six-lane Chenta Bridge will benefit less-developed towns in the Songjiang and Jinshan districts, according to Shanghai Chengtou, which celebrated its 20th anniversary today.
