History meets luxury on Sinan Rd

THE renovation of a 50,000-square-meter zone containing historic houses and modern buildings along Sinan Road will be complete by the end of March, officials said yesterday.

The zone in Luwan District, comprising 51 villas mostly built in the 1920s and 1930s, will become a high-end living and commercial area with boutique hotels, luxury offices, restaurants and franchised stores.

Stretching along the Sinan Road, the zone will provide facilities for VIPs during the six-month World Expo.

Meanwhile, the renovation of the Xinhualian mansion and the construction of the commercial part of the Lake Villa area in southeast of the district will be completed before the Expo opens on May 1.

They will add space for office and business use along with the Sinan Road zone, said Chen Yong, vice director of the Luwan development and reform commission.

Chen said the renovation is part of a move to increase the district's business capacity based on high-end services.
