Holiday should be cold but clear

SHANGHAI will enjoy good weather for most of the New Year's holiday, but rain will be back for the end of the break, weathermen said yesterday.

People will also have to take on an umbrella on Sunday, the first working day after the holiday, and the rain won't stop until next week, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

The holiday will be chilly, as a cold front from the north sweeps down over the city. The minimum temperature today and tomorrow will be minus 1 degree Celsius downtown, and minus 2 to minus 4 degrees in the suburbs. The maximum temperature will range between 5 and 7 degrees over the two days, forecasters said.

The wind will also be stronger during the holiday, with speeds of 20 to 38 kilometers per hour, forecasters said.

The bureau reminded people not to leave precarious things such as flowerpots on open balconies if going out during the holiday, to prevent the wind blowing them off.

From Saturday, the mercury will rise. Although the highs will not change much, the lows will climb back above freezing, the bureau said.
