Hongqiao center to link with 4 walkaways
CHANGNING District will start work on four new underground pedestrian network this year that will link to the New Hongqiao Business Center.
The business center, stretching 3.15 square kilometers and featuring shopping malls and exhibition centers, is separated by the Yan'an Road Elevated Road and Hongqiao Road - a busy traffic lane in the area.
"The four underground tunnels will be connected with the existing tunnels and pedestrian ways on the ground in Hongqiao and Gubei areas for the convenience of travelers," an official with the Changning District Development and Reform Committee said.
They have learnt from the experience in Pudong's Lujiazui area where a ring-shaped elevated walkway had to be built after planners failed to build a pedestrian lane amid the high-rises, forcing people to make a long detour or cross busy roads.
Construction work will first start on a 400-meter tunnel along the Zunyi Road. It will connect the Loushanguan Road Station on Metro Line 2 with Shanghai Hongqiao Friendship Center. Three other shopping malls and Xianxia Road will also be connected.
The other tunnels will be built under Ziyun and Xianxia roads. Work will start after new traffic plans are put in place. "The tunnels are expected to relieve traffic congestions by separating pedestrians and vehicles," an official with the construction and traffic committee of the district said yesterday.
Several other projects, including one that connects Yili Road Station on Line 10 with Shanghai Mart on Yan'an Road W., are in the planning stage. A newly built tunnel under Maotai Road is already open and links the Line 10 station with Takashimaya Department Store.
Close to the Gubei area, the New Hongqiao Business Center starts from Zhongshan Road W. in the east, Huangjincheng Road in the south and ends at Furongjiang Road in the west and Yupin Road S. in the north.
