Hope of relief on downtown parking
THE Shanghai government said yesterday that to relieve parking problems downtown, it will look to allow temporary parking on streets. There will be no new road parking slots, however.
The city’s new road and traffic management law, which was approved by the legislators last week, stipulates the number of 24/7 parking slots on streets within the Outer Ring Road should gradually be reduced.
According to the law, temporary parking slots on the streets will be primarily sourced for residential complexes, schools, hospitals and shopping hubs, and that police should be responsible for working out parking plans.
The law also requires police and the transportation administration to publish notices and seek public opinion about road parking adjustments, including where yellow-colored, non-parking curbside lines should go.
Asked whether yellow lines would be adjusted in the near future, Yu Lie, vice director of Shanghai Public Security Bureau, said police would “make full assessments in enforcing the law.”
According to the city’s Transportation Commission, the government would tap the potential of the Internet to encourage shared parking and increase the utilization rate of available parking slots.
