Hot again today, but rain is coming

SHANGHAI witnessed its hottest day of the year yesterday and more of the same is on the cards for today, forecasters said.

The highest temperature was recorded at 34.8 degrees Celsius in Xujiahui, up from Thursday’s high of 30.9 degrees, though most parts saw the mercury rise to between 33 and 34 degrees.

Today’s top temperature will be a shade lower at 33 degrees, before falling to a relatively modest 27 degrees tomorrow.

Some rain is forecast for Sunday, so youngsters sitting this weekend’s high school entrance examination, or zhongkao, should prepare themselves for a hot and sticky experience.

Forecasters said the plum rain season should start next week, which means it will be cooler and more humid. Temperatures are likely to be between 21 and 27 degrees on Monday, with a high of 25 degrees on Tuesday.
