Hot spell may signal summer

THE weekend will be unseasonably warm, and the sultry spell could usher in the earliest arrival of summer in the city on record, meteorologists said yesterday.

The forecast calls for sunny skies and a high of 33 degrees Celsius, and overnight lows will run around 19 to 20 degrees. On Monday, the high is expected to be 34 degrees.

The warm weather will continue until at least Tuesday, when a cold front is expected to bring rain and a drop in temperature, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

The weathermen mark the arrival of summer when the daily average temperature is higher than 22 degrees for five straight days. The city usually enters summer during the last 10 days of May.
