Illegal cabbie sent to jail

AN illegal cabbie has been jailed for eight years after seriously injuring a law enforcement official by deliberately driving into him.

The official had to have his right leg amputated after the incident.

Changning District People's Court ruled that Yao Quan, trying to evade a checkpoint near Hongqiao International Airport on February 4, had intended to injure the official.

Hou Zhengming, 59, was on duty at the checkpoint when Yao's car suddenly sped towards him. Hou was hit and landed on the car's hood. Instead of stopping, Yao continued driving and did not stop until he crashed into the rear of another car.

Hou had been dragged along for almost a kilometer, colleagues said.

Yao was caught early the next day at a railway station in neighboring Kunshan City.

Police found that Yao's car was a "cloned" one with equipment and car plate bought on the black market. Yao had been in the illegal business for years.

Hou, said colleagues, was a conscientious official and should have been at home as he had just become a grandfather that day.
