Illegal taxi driver held by police

AN illegal taxi driver who injured officers in a bid to escape a traffic inspection on Thursday was caught early yesterday morning.

Yao Quan was trying to board a train back to his hometown in Anhui Province at the railway station in Kunshan City, Jiangsu Province.

He has been detained for further investigation.

Yao hailed a taxi after fleeing the elevated road near Hongqiao International Airport where Yao had hit two traffic officials.

But the taxi driver, who has not been named, had witnessed the incident and, after driving Yao to Cao'an Road in Jiading District and following him to a house in Fangbang Town, called the police.

Hou Zhengming, a traffic assistant hit by Yao's car, suffered a broken leg and will need surgery, according to Shanghai Transport and Port Authority.

Li Jian, a police officer who was also hit by Yao, suffered bruising to his right arm.

Yao was stopped for a routine check at 1:30pm near the airport but failed to stop. He hit Hou, who held on to the bonnet of his car, and crashed through a barricade manned by Li.

A driver surnamed Xu slowed down her car in front of Yao's after she saw what was happening. Yao crashed into the car and ran off.
