Interior decorations on time at airport

MAIN interior decorations for Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport's new major terminal building were completed yesterday, right in time for its scheduled opening in March, said its operator.

Shanghai Airport Authority said light gray has been used as the main color to decorate the inside of the new western terminal.

The neutral color is intended to make guidance and instructional signs more prominent, explained airport official Su Weiwei.

She said areas for different functions, such as check-in, and places near escalators were given different patterns and colored floor pavings to make it easier for travelers to find their way.

The four-level building has a 270-meter main hall and a 1,740-meter long boarding zone.

Passengers will only have to follow a straight route for check-in and boarding.

They'll have a shorter walk, compared to the current terminal building, according to the airport manager.

Seats and security systems are now being installed, and test running of the whole building should start in December.

The western terminal is to become the main passenger building for Hongqiao airport when it opens in March next year.

Hongqiao airport serves as the city's main domestic-flight terminal, with the Pudong International Airport handling mostly international trips.

A new, second runway is to go into operation the same time as the new terminal building, airport officials said.
