International stonework exhibit to open in Songjiang
AN international exhibition of ornamental stonework opens tomorrow in Wanchun Garden in Songjiang District, with the participation of more than 30 cities in China and about 10 countries including the United States, Canada, Russia, Malaysia and Korea.
The 7th International Stone Cultural Festival opens at 3pm and will last for 12 days with an array of natural stone artistry.
There will be a stone photo contest, and the launching ceremony of the book “Enjoying Stones in Wanchun Garden.”
Songjiang District has a long tradition of appreciation of stonework and Wanchun Garden has been named “China Ornamental Stones Base” by the nation’s professional association in the field. The number of merchants at Wanchun Garden has reached 500, providing an annual sales volume of more than 1 billion yuan (US$16.3 million).
The president of China Ornamental Stones Base, surnamed Chen, told Shanghai Daily that the prices of exhibited works range from hundreds to millions yuan. Last year, a stone piece named “Hatched Chicken” was assessed at about 1.3 billion yuan.
