Island transport passages planned

TWO new passages will be added to connect the city’s Chongming Island, according to replies from the city’s transport commission.

One of the passages is expected to be for a Metro or tram line and the other for a high-speed railway line.

According to the commission, the eastern passage will take advantage of the existing Changjiang Tunnel and Changjiang Bridge, which already have enough space for a Metro or tram line.

The plan, which is included in the city’s recent Metro construction strategy for 2017 to 2025, is awaiting approval from the country’s reform and development commission, the commission said.

The other one will be connected to the western part of the island. However, details of the western passage are still under discussion.

This May a seminar on the planned high-speed railway connecting Shanghai’s Pudong New Area, Chongming Island and Qidong City in east China’s Jiangsu Province was held by the National Railway Administration of China in Qidong, Qidong News said.

Sun Zhang, a professor at the Institute of Rail Transit at Tongji University, told thepaper.cn that the planned work will connect the railway networks on the north and south sides of the Yangtze River.

“To reduce the impact on the Changjiang Tunnel and Changjiang Bridge, the speed of trains running on it should be between 40 to 60 kilometers an hour,” he added. Metro trains usually travel at between 70 to 80kph.

Sun also said that construction planning for both passages should take the island’s ecological system into consideration.
