It's going to get colder

ONE of the strongest cold snaps of the winter will hit the city today, weathermen said yesterday.

The minimum temperature will drop to minus 3 degrees Celsius downtown and minus 4 to 6 degrees in the suburbs, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

About 6pm yesterday, residents in Jing'an and Hongkou districts witnessed a small fall of snow. But the bureau said it was not recorded in its system.

Today's maximum temperature will be just 3 degrees. From tomorrow the daily maximum could rise to 6 degrees, but drop again on Monday.

The good news is that there will be sunshine from today to at least middle of next week.

The bureau issued a frost alert yesterday afternoon. Forecasters urged local farmers to take measures to protect fruit trees, flowers and vegetables.

Local power and gas authorities are also preparing for a surge in demand.

The bureau yesterday announced improvements it will be making this year.

There will be more accurate estimates of disastrous weather hitting the city, such as dense fog and lightning. It will also improve short-term forecasts of rainstorm, gale and fog.

Forecasts and alerts will also feature on Metro TVs and electronic billboards.
