Keep winter woollies close at hand

LOCALS are being advised not to pack away their winter clothes quite yet, as temperatures are set to fall this weekend.

Cold fronts will hit the city today and the highest temperature is expected to drop below 10 degrees Celsius, said weather forecasters. There will be rain in some areas.

Cold and warm fronts meeting was blamed for yesterday's lingering fog, which started to thicken late on Thursday night, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

The bureau issued a orange fog alert, the second in the three-level system, which was not lifted until 7:30am yesterday. Visibility in suburban areas was reduced to 200 meters.

Ferry services to the city's three islands were canceled yesterday morning due to poor visibility, said maritime officials at the Wusong Port.

Immigration police at Hongqiao International Airport said 14 international flights scheduled to land at Pudong International Airport were diverted there between late Thursday night and yesterday morning.

They could not land at Pudong International Airport due to fog there.
