Lawmakers propose green auto rewards

SHANGHAI lawmakers have proposed issuing free license plates to eco-friendly cars and increasing government purchases of alternative energy vehicles to help the city go greener.

"The increase in green-energy autos is restrained by a lack of infrastructure and supportive policies" said Huang Renwei, a deputy to the Shanghai People's Congress and deputy head of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.

Huang and 10 other lawmakers made the proposal to help the emerging green industry in Shanghai.

The lawmakers proposed offering free licenses for green autos to encourage the use of low-emission vehicles.

Shanghai now auctions auto plates to control the number of cars on the road. The average price for a license plate has jumped to 38,771 yuan (US$5,893), up 22,801 yuan from last month.

The government reduced the supply of plates from 9,000 in December to 8,000 this month, putting further pressure on prices at auctions.

The lawmakers proposed setting up a fund especially for green autos to support the sales and encourage corporate buying of such vehicles.
