Line 1 extends service for holiday rush
METRO Line 1's service will be extended a little more than one hour tomorrow as the city's subway operator anticipates demand to rise ahead of the National Day holiday.
Line 1's Xujiahui Station will extend service until just after midnight while other stops on the line will only be open to allow passengers to exit stations, Metro authorities said.
"We are fully gearing up in hopes of providing smooth service during what may be the busiest holiday yet," said Huang Qiongnuo, a spokesperson of Shanghai Shentong Group, the Metro operator.
Metro authorities said yesterday that peak passenger volume may reach 4.6 million, breaking the record of 4.42 million set on March 30 this year. Daily subway turnover may average 3.88 million during the eight-day holiday.
From October 1 to 3, all eight lines will run a total of 2,879 services, a 10.9 percent increase from the same period last year.
Tomorrow, five trains will run on Line 1 from Xujiahui Station after regular service ends at about 11pm. The last train will leave the station at 12:10am on Thursday.
There will be about 25 minutes between trains, the Metro operator said.
Meanwhile, Line 2's Nanjing Road E. Station will be closed between 3:30pm and 11:30pm from tomorrow through October 4 as the city imposes traffic limits in the area. Authorities will restrict Metro volume at other stations if necessary.
The other seven lines will run regular schedules tomorrow, the authorities said.
Meanwhile, railway authorities yesterday added another 32 ticket machines at Shanghai Railway Station. The station now has 50 such machines in use. More than 10,000 tickets have been purchased via the ticket machines each day from 7am to 9:30pm.
Rail authorities will also add two Shanghai-to-Beijing trains each day from October 2 to 8 to address increasing demand during the holiday.
