Line 13 to open 5 stations soon

SHANGHAI'S Metro operator is testing trains on Line 13's northwest section, which is expected to open in the next few weeks.

People in suburban Jiading District will be able to take the line to downtown Metro lines like lines 3 and 4 at Jinshajiang Road Station.

The operator will open five stations along the line first, with another two that are still under construction gradually going into service next year.

By 2014, the first phase of the line will stretch 16 kilometers to the downtown business area on Nanjing Road W., where it will meet Line 2 and the under-construction Line 12, which will afford a faster commute to suburban residents.

Line 13 opened a short section with three stops, commonly known as the Expo Line, in the former site for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, but closed them afterwards. They will remain closed for now.

"Expo elements are shown along the line with the various pavilions' pictures attached to the station walls," You Xudong, general manager with the Line 13 project, said yesterday,

Shanghai Shentong Metro Group, the city's Metro operator, said yesterday that there are 69 Metro stations under construction now and the builders have finished the track work of 189 kilometers this year.

The city has world's longest Metro track of more than 425 kilometers, with an average of more than 6 million riders every day.
