Line 15 moves forward to match economic growth
WORK on the city's planned Metro Line 15 to connect Baoshan and Minhang districts through downtown Changning District should make some important strides in the next two years, official said yesterday.
Evaluation of the construction plan and route could be finished this year, and land preparation and any relocation of residents could be done next year.
The city is in urgent need for the new line, which is expected to transport the rapidly increasing number of staff of Minhang's Zizhu Hi-tech Park, which is home to many multinational corporations like Intel and Microsoft as well as students from the university town in Minhang, local legislators said.
"The overall plan on the new line has been approved by the central government, while the construction plan is still under evaluation, especially after the collapse of a construction site in Guangzhou on Monday," said Chen Bizhuang, deputy director of the Shanghai City Transportation Planning Institute.
Line 15 should open to the public by 2020, when the city plans to have increased the total length of the Metro system to 800 kilometers from the current over 400 kilometers, Chen said. The opening of Line 15 along with other new lines, including Line 16 and 13, should help relieve congestion on the city's Metro system, said Guo Haipeng, an official with the Shanghai Transport and Port Administration.
Some 150,000 people are working or living in the Zizhu area and the number is expected to increase to 200,000 by 2015, but there are only about 100 buses to shuttle them between workplaces and the stations of the existing Metro Line 5, said Lu Yi, an official with the Zizhu Hi-tech Park and a legislator.
"Many officials based in the park have explained the inconvenient traffic will make it difficult for them to attract local talent and have asked the traffic authority to start construction soon," Lu said.
