Line 16 passengers face wait for longer trains

METRO trains on Line 16 are to get twice as many carriages after a recently opened extension proved much more popular than predicted.

Capacity will double from three to six carriages, with each train able to carry 1,800 passengers, said officials from operator Shanghai Shentong.

However, passengers will have to endure crowded stations and queues for some time yet as the double-capacity trains will not be rolling for “several months,” admitted officials.

In the meantime, a few additional trains will run on the busiest sections at peak times and passenger flow measures will operate at stations.

“We are planning to add three more carriages to the current three-carriage Line 16 trains to meet demand,” said Cao Qing, director of the Shentong company that operates Line 16.

Cao said trials of six-carriage trains have been held at night, and these will be put into use when ready.

Yesterday at East Zhoupu Station, passengers entered through Exit No. 2 and left through Exit No. 1 to keep passenger flow more smooth.

Staff also put up barriers to limit numbers entering at one time.

“We can understand these measures are for safety concerns,” commuter Xia Jinjin told Shanghai Daily. “But I hope they work out a plan soon.”

Two stations opened last Sunday, extending the line to Longyang Road, an interchange with lines 2 and 7.

Some 70,000 passengers a day were recorded early last week and at peak times stations close to the extension have seen a 50 percent passenger increase compared to before.

The increase was higher than predicted, according to Cao.
