Looking set for start of autumn

CLOUDY to overcast weather is expected to dominate the city’s skies until Friday, and stable temperatures are forecast, but the weekend will be wet due to the influence of warm and cold air, forecasters said yesterday.

The city is expected to officially enter autumn this week as yesterday marked the third day when the average temperature fell below 22 degrees Celsius, according to Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

Autumn in meteorological terms is announced when five consecutive days with average temperature below 22 degrees are recorded after liqiu, the Chinese solar term for the start of autumn that this year fell on August 7.

If there is a run of five days with average temperatures below 22 degrees, then Saturday will have marked the start of autumn.

Last year autumn was announced as having started on October 8.

This week, the lowest temperature should be between 18 and 20 degrees, and the high 22 and 24 degrees.

The air quality is forecasted to be excellent for both today and tomorrow, according to the bureau. It should be overcast to cloudy tomorrow.
