Low-density business hub for former Expo site

A NEW central business district will be created in Houtan on the former World Expo site in the Pudong New Area within five years, government officials said yesterday.

The 1-square-kilometer area, which already has good transport links as a legacy of the Expo, will become "a new Lujiazui" - Shanghai's existing financial hub in Pudong - with towers covering a 1.9-square-kilometer floor area.

The Houtan CBD will have buildings linked underground to separate pedestrians and traffic and an underground space of up to 500,000 square meters will house commercial and leisure facilities.

Buildings will be no taller than 275 meters to form a low-density space. Green areas will cover 27 percent space of the development. It should take shape in 2015, according to the Sanlin Expo Function Area Economic Development Promotion Center.
