Lujiazui roads open to traffic

DRIVERS and pedestrians should be enjoying cleaner and smoother traffic around the Lujiazui Financial Zone, as some major roads around there once blocked for Expo-related infrastructure constructions are now open to traffic again, Pudong New Area officials said yesterday.

The newly built and revamped roads have a total length of more than 90 kilometers.

In addition, major roads running through the core of the Lujiazui area have all been reopened after being blocked mainly for construction of an underground vehicle tunnel connecting both banks of the Huangpu River.

When the underground part of the tunnel is done, it will take no more than 10 minutes to drive under the river.

The reopening of the main road accesses in Lujiazui means pedestrians will no longer have to walk a long detour, a steady complaint among commuters throughout the construction.

The roads supporting Expo traffic started in late 2007 at a cost, including some related traffic work, of about 40 billion yuan (US$5.9 billion).
