Man dies after jump in front of train
A YOUNG man committed suicide in Shanghai yesterday by jumping onto the tracks at Metro Line 2's Century Avenue Station.
Police have not yet released the man's name.
No ID card was found on the man, aged in his late teens, according to an official with the Metro management.
This was the fourth similar incident reported on city Metro lines since May 31.
Metro staff said an eastbound train applied the brakes after receiving an emergency call about 9:40am from station staff but could not avoid hitting the man, who was killed instantly.
A delay ensured as the body was removed by police. Full operation of Line 2 was restored at 10:23am, the Metro authority said.
Hundreds of commuters were crammed at the station, shared by three Metro lines, in the wake of the accident.
The station has not installed platform safety doors, which stand more than a meter high, as many others have.
There are safety doors on Line 2's People's Square Station, which were first put into use last month.
Metro officials said yesterday that they were considering adding safety doors to more stations as jumping had become more prevalent.
