Marriage registration centers prepare for rush of Valentine’s Day lovebirds

SHANGHAI marriage registration centers are opening earlier and staying open over lunch to cope with an expected surge of couples looking to tie the knot on Valentine’s Day.

The Hongkou District Marriage Registration Center said it will open at 8am, 30 minutes earlier than usual, and cancel its usual two and a half hour lunch break from 11am to 1:30pm.

There will also be longer opening hours at centers in Yangpu District and the Pudong New Area.

And marriage registration centers across the city will not close until all couples are registered, even if they haven’t made a reservation, said officials.

Valentine’s Day is a popular date for city lovebirds to get hitched, and as February 14 also falls on a Saturday this year, large numbers are expected.

Last year, the figure was 4,900 couples — more than 10 times the normal figure, according to the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau.

The city record number for marriage registrations was on October 10, 2010, when 10,150 couples tied the knot.

The number combination 10-10-10 symbolizes perfection in everything in Chinese.
