Mercury set to climb again after the snow
SHANGHAI should feel some relief following a freezing week, with temperatures expected to climb from today, forecasters said.
Following yesterday's snow, the mercury should reach 5 degrees this afternoon and gradually creep up to between 7 and 10 degrees in the days that follow, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
But the conditions should still be overcast and drizzle is forecast.
Today should be overcast, with temperatures ranging from freezing to a high of 5 degrees Celsius.
Drizzle is expected tomorrow, with the high expected to climb to 8 degrees.
Snow surprised many residents yesterday afternoon but did not lie and soon turned to sleet.
And with temperatures rising, more snow is unlikely early next week.
The next cold front is set to start next Wednesday, forecasters said.
Fire authorities yesterday warned locals to pay extra attention to fire safety during cold weather after three fires broke out since Thursday evening, leaving, in one incident, a man critically injured.
The 88-year-old living on the Chongming Island suffered more than 90 percent burns in a kitchen fire about 9am yesterday.
He was later reported to be in critical condition.
In a second fire about 1:30pm yesterday, a three-story apartment block on Hami Road in Changning District went up in flames.
And on Thursday evening a five-story residential apartment on Changzhong Road in Hongkou District was completely destroyed in a blaze.
Meanwhile, Shanghai-based Donghai Rescue Bureau said 13 sailors on a freighter stranded in the East China Sea were rescued yesterday morning.
The freighter was left stranded after its turbo became tangled with fishing net on Tuesday afternoon.
Strong waves caused by a cold front hindered the rescue operation earlier.
Rescuers said all the sailors were in good health.
