Mercury set to plunge

THERE will be some relief from incessant rains later this week, but the temperature will plunge to 1 degree Celsius on Friday, forecasters said yesterday.
It is very likely that winter — in the real meteorological sense of the term — will arrive in the city this week under the influence of a cold front, said Fu Yi, a chief service officer at the Shanghai Metrological Bureau.
Fu said the city usually enters the winter season on December 3. In the last 10 years, the earliest winter was on November 13 in 2009, and the late was on December 21 in 2008. Last year, it arrived on December 1.
Under the Chinese lunar calender, yesterday was the beginning of xiaoxue, or light snow. The start of xiaoxue means the weather would steadily get colder.
The week will start with rainy days due to the active movement of warm and wet air. Showers are expected again today, and the mercury will hover between a low of 15 degrees and a high of 18 degrees.
The high was 19.6 degrees yesterday.
The air quality should also be good to excellent today.
A strong cold front will hit the city between late tomorrow and Friday. It will be cold but sunny, the bureau said.
Drizzle to moderate rain is expected tomorrow and the highest mercury will drop to a low of 13 degrees.
On Wednesday, it will be overcast to cloudy with continued drizzle, but the temperature will plummet to 7 degrees. On Thursday, it will drop to 5 degrees.
