Mercury soars in city
IT was another record high for temperatures with the mercury in Shanghai touching 37 degrees Celsius yesterday.
And it could just top that today.
The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a yellow alert at 9:40am yesterday and soon upgraded it to orange — this year’s first — at 1:04pm, the second highest in the three-color system.
In most districts the mercury soared above 35 degrees by noon. Three hours later, the benchmark Xujiahui weather station saw the temperature climb to 37 degrees, the highest so far this year.
Suburban Baoshan and Jiading districts in northern Shanghai also topped 37 degrees while it was 34 in southern Jinshan and Fengxian districts. Baoshan District recorded a high of 37.8 degrees.
It could get even hotter today under brilliant sunshine with the high reaching 38 degrees. Similar conditions with highs between 35 and 37 degrees are expected to last into the weekend.
There is a slim chance of few afternoon showers on the weekend.
