Mercury to soar as city celebrates the holiday

THE recent cold weather is set to continue for a few more days yet, but the sun will shine considerably brighter during the Spring Festival holiday, forecasters said yesterday.
From today through Sunday, the low temperatures will fluctuate between minus 1 and 1 degree Celsius, while the highs will peak at 6 to 8 degrees.
On Monday, however — the first day of the Year of the Monkey — the high will leap to 11 degrees (with a low of 3), before continuing north to 15 degrees on Tuesday, and 17 on both Wednesday and Thursday, the forecasters said.
Despite the hike in temperature, Thursday will witness the return of the rain clouds, and these are likely to linger for several days, meaning a warm but soggy end to the festive week.
The expected warmer weather corresponds with the start today of the Lichun solar term, which according to superstition marks the beginning of spring.
Meanwhile, the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center said yesterday that a lack of wind on Saturday — Chinese New Year’s Eve — might be detrimental to the air quality.
“The city might encounter some light pollution from Sunday evening through Monday,” Wang Qian, deputy director of the center’s air monitoring office, told Shanghai Daily.
“I hope people will obey the ban on fireworks so as not to worsen the situation.”
Aside from that blip, the air quality over the Spring Festival holiday should be generally good, he said.
