Metro Line 12 expected to be completed by 2012
THE construction of Metro Line 12, which links Minhang District to Pudong New Area, will start within the year.
It is expected the line will be finished by 2012, Labor Daily reported today.
Line 12 runs through the city from the west to the northeast. It starts from Qixin Road station in Minhang, crosses Xuhui, Luwan, Jing'an, Zhabei, Hongkou, Yangpu and finally ends at Shangchuan Road station in Pudong.
It has 32 underground stations along the 39.5 kilometers long route and among them 14 stations are available for interchange with line 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11.
Twenty-one new trains with eight carriages will be put into use on Line 2 early next year to increase the line's capability by at least 30 percent, the report said.
Currently there are 24 trains working on Line 2. Metro operators have also decided to turn the current six-carriage-trains into eight-carriage trains, according to the report.
After the completion, a train will have the capacity to carry at least 2,400 passengers at a time, an increase of 600.
The 21 new trains will have increased capacity to withstand a breakdown and an electronic display screen on each side outlining route information.
