Metro Line 13 tunneling starts

THE underground construction of Metro Line 13, linking northwest Jiading District to downtown Jing'an District, started yesterday.

The 16.4-kilometer-long first phase line will open after the 2010 Shanghai World Expo finishes, Metro builders said. The line will run through four districts with 14 stations.

The project started last December. The first phase will run through Jiading, Putuo and Zhabei districts and end at Nanjing Road W. Station in Jing'an.

Line 13 will be connected with another six Metro lines, forming a complete subway network in the city by 2012 when 13 Metro lines under operation will cover 500 kilometers and include 237 stations.

Line 13 also has an exclusive feature, the Expo section, which saw tunnel work completed on July 30. This section will link Shanghai's entertainment center, Xintiandi, to the Expo zone with a short train ride.

Expo visitors will able to take trains between Madang Road and Expo Site stations, in time for the May start.
