Metro Line 8 extension in operation
THE second phase of Metro Line 8 started operating yesterday morning, increasing the local Metro network to 250 kilometers.
The first train left from Lianhang Road Station at 8am. About 200 locals, who have been relocated for the World Expo site construction, were invited to be the first group of passengers on the extended line.
No breakdowns or malfunctions, which happened frequently during testing of the signal system, were reported yesterday.
The second phase of Line 8, which is about 14.2 kilometers long, extends the service from its current terminal in Pudong New Area to Minhang District.
There are nine new stations on the extension from Chengshan Road Station in Pudong New Area to the Shanghai Airspace Science Park Station in Minhang District.
But the Jiyang Road Station, a transit station with Line 6, won't open until the end of the year because of Expo construction, officials said.
The extended service will benefit tens of thousands of residents who once lived in the Shanghai World Expo site and have been relocated to Pujiang Town.
Residents in Pujiang Town are now able to travel to People's Square in about 36 minutes, as compared to roughly two hours by bus.
The line runs from 5:30am as before until 10pm, one hour later than past finish.
