Metro brainwave won't stop the traffic

AN underground garage held the key to the problem of linking Metro Line 1 and Line 9 in the Xujiahui area.

By next March passengers will be able to transfer between the two lines after the garage is converted into a station.

The station will open on the second phase of Line 9 by the end of this year and a passage between Line 9 and Line 1 will be in use next March.

"It wasn't that easy to figure the structure in a busy business district," said Xu Zhengliang, the station's chief designer.

The project had bothered Xu since he and his team could not afford to close traffic in the area -- one of the biggest transport hubs in the city with more than 12 bus lines.

The breakthrough came when Xu was taking his daughter to a KFC in Xujiahui and he saw the underground garage.

He measured the height and size of the garage and realized it could be made into a station without having to close the roads above.

"The traffic would have been disrupted for at least three years but for Xu's idea," said Liu Weijie, a designer with Shanghai Urban Construction Design Institute.

The second phase of Line 9 will run through Xuhui District to Pudong New Area with 10 stations by the end of this year. Line 9 will then run from Songjiang District to Pudong.
